Archetypal Tarot
“If one does not dare the descent into the darkness, the higher levels of consciousness will never be reached.” – Marie-Louise von Franz
My Approach
An archetypal approach to the tarot means that I interpret the cards as reflecting what is present in the psyche. It’s a mistake to think that a tarot spread is random. The cards appear based on synchronicity – the idea that the universe is singular and that each apparently separate “thing” is both caused by and the result of every single other thing. This is another way of saying that everything is connected, but in a much more intimate and entangled way than you might imagine. The constellation of dirt on the sidewalk will also tell us about your psyche, but I haven’t trained in how to read that! I have trained in the symbolism of the tarot cards.
In this approach to tarot, divination is “seeing the divine in the mundane,” according to Ken James. We are not looking at what will happen in the future, though I do believe the cards can tell us that. It’s both more empowering and more useful to take a psycho-spiritual approach and look at what is happening in our psyches right now. When my own psyche is illuminated and clear to me, I don’t have to wonder what the best choice is. My deepest internal compass has already made the choice, I only have to listen closely and follow the simplest and most obvious next step. Looking at the cards in this way sometimes stirs up more questions and does not immediately bring the clarity we all wish for. But it does show us the sometimes winding pathway to finding that clarity. The tarot does not give answers: it guides you to the answers that are tucked away inside your very self.
Hi, I’m Shiva
Alchemical Tantric Taroist
The Gold in the Dark
I interpret the cards, using traditional tarot meanings as well as a blend of nondual, mythological, and depth psychological lenses. Archetypal forces and repressed shadow are revealed to be guides on the path of awakening. Shadow work is often inaccurately understood as fixing or changing the negative aspects of ourselves. Integrating the shadow is actually the difficult process of bringing into consciousness that which is unconscious, both positive and negative, in the service of wholeness. I will share practical steps to move forward and work with both your strengths and weaknesses to illuminate all areas of the psyche.
Power in Surrender
“Freedom is just another word for nothing left to lose.” – Janis Joplin. We take this in the most positive sense, not the bittersweet sense in which Janis seemed to express. The greatest power is in total vulnerability. When you know that nothing real can be lost, the power that arises from this realization is transcendent. This surrender is not to another person, or anything outside of yourself. It is only surrendering to “what is.” This is the clarity that brings true freedom. In order to surrender to what is, we must become conscious of what is unconscious.

In Archetypal Tarot we center on the Goal of Individuation
Individuation means becoming a single, homogeneous being, and, in so far as ‘individuality’ embraces our innermost, last, and incomparable uniqueness, it also implies becoming one’s own self.” – from The Collected Works, Vol. 7: Two Essays on Analytical Psychology
